The word aquamarine is derived from the Latin words “aqua marina” which means “sea water” reflecting the wonderful colour of the crystals. The aquamarine stone is a member of the beryl family, and is also the birthstone for March, having reputed healing properties to cure throat problems and stress related illnesses. Aquamarine ranges in colour from an almost colourless pale blue to blue-green or teal. The most prized colour is a deep-blue aqua colour. Like topaz, aquamarine is often heat treated to bring out the colour of the stone. It possesses a breathtaking brilliance and incredible brightness, and is an ideal gemstone to incorporate into jewellery.
